The AED, or United Arab Emirates Dirham, is the official currency of the UAE. It was introduced on 19 May 1973, replacing the Qatar and Dubai riyal. The ISO 4217 currency code is AED (Arab Emirates Dirham) and its symbol is د.إ. Each Dirham is subdivided into 100 fils. The currency is issued and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), which was established in 1980.
